Hujang Berrek

December In East Coast

This is what l longed for December in Trengganu. Strong wind, big waves and hujang berrek.

"Hujang berrek" is the non stop rain from the morning to the next morning to the next morning. Rarely heavy but it rain with no stop and no break. We called that type of rain as "hujang berrek".

In my childhood "hujang berrek" was my escapism. We looked to the sky and say, ah please don't stop the rain. We know for sure when the rain start to become "hujang berrek", the flood will follow. And the flood brought to us then lot of happiness.

This year, l observed we are enjoying less rain than usual. And the sea is not really rough yet and the wind is not in full blow yet. And we are now approaching mid December. Perhaps time was changed and the season changed too.

Perhaps people is now saying, "ooh, hujang sokmo lening, nak buat kerjaang payoh" instead of "ooh, musim hujang, hujang lah dia, Tuhan buat molek doh.."

Kherna

"Kherna" is an almost forgotten word in Lughatul Trengganu, which means, to cut things to become small. Mostly "kherna" word is use when the cut become too small to be usable for anything it was meant to be. It's a kind of derogatory word.

So, one may hear that "Mok suruh Mek kerat mmolek daun kuchai ning, doh yang Mek gi kherna gining semer, nok buat letok dalam jjemput guaner".

Which is, the Mom asked his daughter to cut the onion's leave properly but the result became a bit to small to be used for cooking.

Thinking about that, it's already quite some time that l didn't taste the jjemput gandum berdaun kuchai..

Tangga : The Series

In the days of old, when TV was still not a familiar household object and the radio was still transmitting in SW, human interactions were the best escapism available to most folks back then.

In the days of old, when self grooming was still, to put the least, eau naturale,
East Coast women folks normally spend their late afternoon, gathered on the anak tangga of the house, helping each other, ambushing the parasites on them hairs.

For those of us today, who deprive of their chance to see this in actual, you imagine women folks gather from the top step to the bottom step and each of them helping each other on the head, seeking you know what.

But that's not the story. The main thing was, the co-curricular that came along with that activity is the main attraction of the day. Most of the time, the juiciest story of the day will be circulated during this occasion, which goes like :

"Diri dengor dok cerita Gayah weh bla bla bla.." Then Gayah asked " Abende pulok Ngoh weh? " which provoked Ngoh to continue her story "Ambe bukang nok kabor sangat, tapi nok ghoyat hal bla bla bla"...

In general, in Trengganu, we call this "making ketupat"..

Disclamer : As Trengganu moved to Terengganu and modernisation creeping in everywhere, today, it's almost impossible to see things like this anymore.

Jambatan Pulau Sekati

Ghertok Pulau Sekati. Land reclaimation work on the Losong side of the river bank is in progress. As mentioned earlier, a huge rengas tree was gone ( referring to the pic below, that huge rengas tree was majestically grew on the RHS of the Ghertok's end ) and the house is no more with it's stilts in the water.

On the other side, the Ghertok refurbishment work is in progress too. Featured here are the newly installed Ghertok hand rails.

Pulau Sekati

Wallahu'alam.

Kuala Dungun

These shoplots of Kuala Dungun won't last long anymore. If any of us want to capture this area, please do as soon as all of us can. The tenants were gone, the facade will change, the 1950s aura will vapourise. We can't stop the change but we can record it definitely. My source told me that this scene will be no more by mid of 2013, or earlier.

Kuala Dungun, anyone?

Tangga Series : Of Lambor and Selasor

Tangga Series : In some of Terengganu's traditional house concept, the flight of steps will not end up directly to the main door but instead it rest on a platform, of which in certain part of Terengganu, Losong especially, called it as "Selasor". In some other area of Terengganu named this platform as "Lambor".

Whenever casual guest came in visiting, unless very official or berhajat besar, normally the meet and greet will be only on "atas lambor".

Whenever too, when a far a time in between, a Tok Sheikh Jual Permata came in visiting, the business will be conducted "atas selasor" too..

Tangga Series : The House of Tok Yam

Ambe sakning terjung dok ttangga hungga mari. Nasek baik takdok benda benda, mutor jer pecoh sebeng"

Which is : " l was at the kitchen, cooking. Then l heard a crash sound similar to someone crashing with a motorbike. Take a look via my kitchen's window and found my son crashed to the coconut tree with the motorbike. So, l was "terjun tak bertangga" to reach to my son. Luckily, nothing was serious, only the plastic fairing on the bike was broken to pieces"
